What is a take-profit order?

Also called: TP, take profit, TP order

Updated Ninja Terminal team

Definition

A take-profit order is a conditional order that closes a position when price reaches a target you set in your favor. For a long, the target is above entry. For a short, it is below entry. When the trigger is reached, the exchange sends a market or limit order to close the position and lock in the gain.

A take-profit order lets you plan an exit before you enter. You do not have to watch the screen when price reaches your target.

How does it work?

You set a trigger price and an order type for the exit: market or limit. When the trigger price is touched, the exchange sends the exit order.

Example: you are long BTC from 60,000 and set a take-profit trigger at 63,000. When the trigger price is reached, a market exit closes the position near 63,000. A limit exit rests at your limit price and may not fill if price moves away.

The trigger can use the last price or the mark price, depending on the venue and your setting. Take-profit is the mirror of a stop-loss order. Both are normally reduce-only.

How do venues name it?

Venue Order types
Binance (USD-M) TAKE_PROFIT and TAKE_PROFIT_MARKET
Hyperliquid “Take Market” and “Take Limit”
OKX, Bybit Attached or separate take-profit settings; the API fields differ

Binance, OKX, and Hyperliquid also differ in how they attach take-profit to a position. See the guide on take-profit and stop-loss by exchange.

Where does it appear in Ninja Terminal?

You can set take-profit and stop-loss when you enter a position. Quick Entry can also add automatic take-profit and stop-loss to market entries, with a trigger based on mark price or last price.

Frequently asked questions

Is a take-profit order the same as a limit order?

No. A limit order is live on the book from the start. A take-profit order stays inactive until the trigger price is reached.

Can a take-profit order fail to fill?

A market take-profit normally fills but at the available price. A limit take-profit can stay unfilled if price trades through your limit price quickly.
